So let’s start right in!
How To Create A Blog In 2022 With 12 Actionable Steps
Decide on the subject of your blog
You need to decide on the subject of your blog. What will you write about?
You can choose one big topic and focus all your posts around that, like fashion or cooking, or you can pick a different topic for each post.
If you want to write random opinions on stuff, you might want to go asking these questions yourself.
Why come to your blog?
What will make people read it?
Is it because they’re interested in your particular take on an issue, or are they looking for more information about a specific topic, like how to cook something?
Some people start blogs because they want to make money off of them; if this is the case for you, keep in mind that most blogs don’t get enough traffic or generate enough income to pay rent.
Choose a blogging platform
Once you’ve decided to start a blog, the next step is selecting a blogging platform. A blogging platform is software that handles the technical elements of managing your blog.
You can also think of it as the “back-end” or “admin area” of your site.
In other words, it allows you to focus on creating content and engaging with your audience rather than worrying about complicated technologies like hosting, security and maintenance.
There are hundreds of different blogging platforms for you to choose from.
How do you know which one is right for you?
Here’s an overview of 5 popular choices for starting a blog:
I would strongly suggest you create a blog with wordpress.org software that allows you to self-hosting for far better control, designing, and managing options.
Pick a domain name.
It’s time to pick a domain name. A good domain name is easy to remember, easy to spell, and easy to pronounce.
It should be relatively simple because you want people to be able to type the address correctly into their browsers without difficulty.
If your domain has many hyphens in it or other special characters besides dots, it would probably be best if you chose something else.

How to make a blog on WordPress with Bluehost (The most beginner-friendly)
It’s as simple as a few clicks to get you started on making a blog on WordPress. Below are the steps to choosing your web host:
- Go with Bluehost (or another beginner-friendly web host).
Why I recommend Bluehost:
- WordPress recommends it
- It offers a one-click install of WordPress, so you don’t have to worry about installing content management systems from wordpress.org
- It offers a free domain when you sign up for 12 months or longer (otherwise, the cost is $11.99/yr)
- It includes a free SSL certificate that is necessary if you want to get ranked higher in search engines and secure visitor data
- You can try it risk-free since there’s a money-back guarantee if you decide it isn’t for you within 30 days of signing up
- Click on “Get Started Now” under “Shared Hosting”.
Get web hosting.
To run a blog, you need web hosting. Web hosting is where your site lives on the internet. For example, my site lives on a server in Washington state!
Web hosts are usually paid for by the month and include several features such as speed, reliability, security, and support. You can sign up with many different web hosts, but I recommend Bluehost or SiteGround.
A beginner’s tip:
If you’re just starting I’d suggest looking into shared hosting. This means that your website will be hosted on a server with lots of other sites.
This is generally inexpensive and perfect for beginners! As your site grows, you can move onto something like VPS Hosting (virtual private server), cloud hosting, or dedicated hosting which all allow more customization of your site and better performance (aka faster loading speeds).
But for starting a new blog just go with Bluehost or any other shared hosting.
Set up your blog with a WordPress theme
Now that you’ve picked a platform to use, it’s time to choose your theme. Your theme is how your blog will look on the front end—the part a reader sees when they visit your website.
WordPress.org offers a vast library of themes, which you can search for by keyword or select based on features such as “responsive” (works with mobile devices) and “featured images” (allows for an image at the top of your post).
Once you’ve found the theme that fits your vision, download it from WordPress.org and save it in a spot where you can easily find it later (such as in your Downloads folder).
Then upload it directly into WordPress by going to Appearance > Themes and selecting Add New > Upload Theme. Once you hit Choose File and select the ZIP file of your new theme, hit Install Now and Activate once the installation is finished.
Themes are incredibly customizable, allowing them like yourself all sorts of ways to personalize their blogs! You can change everything from their color schemes, fonts, and widget placement—and even add new widgets!

Essential WordPress plugins
When choosing your plugins, remember that you need to pick ones that match your purpose. Plugins can be categorized in the “Do’s and Don’ts” of plugin management.
Plugins are great additions to any website or blog. However, if you get too caught up in installing them, the result could be a long list of plugins that don’t add value to your site. If a plugin is too complicated or expensive, it’s probably not worth using at all.
If you have a simple blog with only one post, don’t use a plugin that allows you to schedule posts and publish them automatically over time as this would be unnecessary for such a small blog. If you want to schedule then use some other software like Hootsuite which is free and much more user-friendly than most WordPress plugins anyway.
If it’s too old (like over ten years old), it’s probably outdated by now so better off not having it installed at all because many plugins become incompatible with newer versions of WordPress which means they won’t work anymore!

Customize your blog design and structure.
Now that you have a website name, it’s time to get to work on the design and structure of your blog. Here are some steps to follow:
- Choose your domain name. A domain name is what people type in the search bar to find your blog. Think of it as an address for your site. There are various websites out there where you can buy a domain name, like GoDaddy or Bluehost. You just need to choose one and pay for it.
- Create a navigation bar. The navigation bar is what allows visitors to easily navigate through the important parts of your web pages by selecting links on the bar itself or within drop-down menus associated with it. A good navbar might contain links such as “Home,” “About,” and “Contact.”
- Design a header, sidebar, footer, content area, typography colors, images, background color (if not white), etc.
If all these components sound unfamiliar to you because the design is not in your wheelhouse, don’t worry!

13 Blogging Tips For Beginners who starting a blog in 2022
Don’t start with an about page
It’s typical to start a blog by writing an “About Me” page first. Some blogging platforms urge you to create it as soon as you sign up. This may be the perfect approach for a personal blog, but if you’re starting a company blog, don’t write anything before you’ve set out your goals and objectives (see my previous point). Once you know where you want to be in 12 months, it’ll be much easier to write about who you are and what your plans are for getting there.
Do set goals for yourself.
We might want to be physically fit, but we also need to be mentally and emotionally healthy.
There’s no easy way to achieve this goal if you don’t have a goal in mind. Before starting this blog, we figured out what kind of content we wanted to write about and what we wanted our readers to get out of it.
Then, we started preparing ourselves for the journey ahead.
We outlined goals before creating a blog:
How many posts per week would be ideal?
How long should each post be?
What kind of variety in topics would make the most sense?
What words and phrases are important to use when writing up your blogging routines or tips on achieving your goals?
We took time in outlining these things so that by the time we began working on our blog, everything was clear and doable.
To create a mission statement for your blog.
A blog mission statement is a summary of what you want your blog to accomplish. Why are you creating it? Who do you want to help? What kind of content will you create? It’s essentially an elevator pitch for your blog. And, as such, it serves as a guiding light that will help keep you focused and on track when creating content or organizing your site structure.
There’s no need to make this complicated — just write down what you hope to achieve with your blog in the next year or so, and then get back to work! You’ll be able to refer back to this mission statement whenever you feel lost or confused about the direction of your site.
Write compelling content for your blog.
- Write with a consistent voice
- Be mindful of your audience. It’s true what they say: you can’t please everybody. But if you’re blogging, it’s important to know who you’re trying to please, and write for them. There are plenty of blogs that aren’t meant for everyone. If you want to help women over 50 overcome divorce trauma, don’t worry about people who fall outside that demographic not liking your blog.
- Use anecdotes to tell stories and make them relatable
- Strong verbs keep sentences punchy and interesting
- Keep it simple! People get bored by long words and complex concepts
- Use data (and graphs!) to support your points
Don’t skip the planning phase.
Many people think of a blog as merely a list of articles, but it’s much more than that. A blog is an effective way to communicate with your audience regularly. That’s why it’s important to develop a plan for your content and consider your audience (and its needs) when you do so. You should have a good understanding of who you are writing for and what they want before you start—otherwise, it will be hard to keep them interested in what you have to say.
Do brainstorm content types and categorize.
Over time, you’ll begin to create more content and can categorize blog types of content.
- How-to posts
- List posts (e.g.: “5 Things We Wish We Knew Before Starting a Blog“)
- Case studies (e.g.: “How We Increased the Readership of Buffer’s Blog to Over 1.5 Million Visits“)
- Individual tools or resources (e.g.: “Bluehost Review“)
- Interviews with experts in the field
- Pick names for each category—maybe something like “Best Tools for Writers,” or “Case Studies.
Create a list of post ideas for each category and plan out your first 5-10 posts so that when you’re ready to publish, you have some prepared so that you can start getting traffic right away.
Do plan out your first 5-10 posts before starting a blog.
Blogging is about consistency. If you don’t have an idea of where you are going, how are you going to keep yourself motivated to get there? In this article, we will dive into the ins and outs of planning your first posts before starting a blog.
If you plan out at least 10 topics, it helps in a few ways:
- It gives you a good idea of what type of content or niche your blog should be in.
- Planning gives you time to flesh out each topic into full content with enough time for research and formatting for each post.
That’s why it’s important to develop a plan for your content and consider your audience (and its needs) when you do so. You should have a good understanding of who you are writing for and what they want before you start—otherwise, it will be hard to keep them interested in what you have to say.
To Create a blog don’t register just any domain name.
When you are selecting a domain name, you want to make sure that it is memorable and easy to spell. If your domain name is too long or complicated, then people won’t remember how to get back to your website. You also want your domain name to reflect your brand, but be careful not to go too obscure here.
Yes, you may have a great idea for a blog that has never been done before, but if the blog title is hard for people to pronounce or spell, then they will likely not be able to find you online.
Make sure that when you choose your domain name it is available on popular social media sites as well so that later down the road when you go to add in those additional social profiles; hopefully the username will match your site address.
Do choose the right host for your blog
Choosing the right host for your blog is a crucial step when creating a blog. You’ll likely want to avoid self-hosting. You can always switch to that when you want more control over your blog and are ready to get more technical, but web hosting is not something that most new bloggers are comfortable with.
You’ll be happy to hear that there are plenty of other options available when it comes to web hosting for your blog. As with anything else in this space, there will be many different choices for you and you must make the right one by choosing the host that best fits your needs.
Start With Bluehost
Don’t fret over what blogging platform to use.
Don’t fret over what blogging platform to use. There are many to choose from and WordPress is the most popular – so much so that WordPress powers 30% of all websites on the web today.
Most beginners think that you need a self-hosted WordPress site (WordPress.org) but that is not true!
There are two versions of WordPress:
WordPress.com – This version is free and hosted by Automattic, the company behind WordPress, its plugins and themes, etc. The benefit of using this version of WordPress is that you don’t have to worry about installing it or maintaining it on your hosting account. Also, Automattic automatically keeps your website secure and up to date with their latest software updates as soon as they’re released by the developers – no more doing this yourself manually!
